The 2,147 mile long walk (& why)

If you want to know why so many Central Americans are flooding towards the U.S.’s southern border, go to the government themselves.

In a nutshell, it’s increasing socioeconomic inequality coupled with a growing youthful population who have no gainful employment opportunities. Many youth will drift towards one of two gangs, the MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha) and the M-18 (18th Street gang). These gangs essentially engage in turf wars and battle over transitory routes for people, drugs, and arms through the Northern Triangle of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Also, a large section of this area is in the Central American Dry Corridor, which is highly susceptible to irregular rain fall. According to a 2017 United Nations World Food programme, repeated droughts since 2014 have destroyed crops and resulted “in levels of food insecurity [that] had not been previously seen in the region.”
